What Have Labour Done For Me?

Under the management of the Labour party in Government we have seen the rich get richer and the poor make little progress or improvement.

We have seen government debt rise to previously unimaginable levels.

We have seen the then chancellor, telling the banks what a wonderful job they were doing only a year or so before the financial crisis hit, which apparently came as a completely surprise to the ex chancellor, now Prime Minister who only had to open his eyes to see how madness had taken over the financial industry but chose not to.

Our unelected Prime Minister then proceeded to give the banks billions of pounds of taxpayer’s money which allowed the banks to continue enjoying a very pleasant lifestyle and pay themselves fortunes in bonuses while many of the electorate were left with heaps of debt on credit cards at outrageous interest rates and they got no help whatsoever.

The Labour Party decided who could take their turn at being Prime Minister with no consultation with the electorate who were considered irrelevant to the discussions.

We have a secret service who, it would appear, colluded with the US agencies to turn a blind eye to illegal practices when interrogating suspects.

We have seen this government oversee the most outrageous claims on expenses by MP’s of both main parties and whilst they would argue that they have responded to this to deal with the problem it remains a contencious issue and perhaps the most important question is, Why did it take an illegal leak of the information to make the government actually do anything about it?

It does seem to be the way politics works is that you do what you want and ignore what is right unless you get caught out. Rather than saying we have a problem here and we must sort it out the government always choose to defend their actions and insist they are right and everybody else is wrong.

We recently heard about problems at Stafford hospital that led to many unnecessary deaths and they were caused by the management being focused on managing their government set targets instead of focusing on patients. Instead of blaming the managers the government should be questioning their worshipping of targets and the expectations and demands it places on people.

Sections of the education system are breaking down with staff stressed beyond any sort of reasonably acceptable level with teaching being carried out by unqualified assistants and all this before the massive budget cuts that everyone expects to follow the election, whoever wins.

The country has been collapsing around our ears while the government have smiled and told us how great everything was. We knew deep down it wasn’t true. We knew, even as Gordon Brown was telling us there would be no more boom and bust, that the financial industry was running headlong into disaster. We could see it was unsustainable. Why couldn’t the then chancellor, now Prime Minister, and the regulators and the banks? The answer must be that they simply didn’t want to see the inevitable collapse and were far more concerned with taking credit for the credit card funded boom we were experiencing. None of them stand up and accept responsibility for the bust we and our children will be paying for, for years to come.

So many failings and so much ego involved. Gordon Brown is Prime Minister because he decided he should be. How does that happen in a democracy? Did you have a say in it? No.

Is he a bully? Who knows but I do know that someone who is so sure they are the right person to be Prime Minister is not the right person to be able to know if they really are as he seems to be more than a little biased.

Will any other lot be any better? It is a worry. The system seems to be so geared to be for the benefit of politicians and their egos at the expense of the public you have to wonder. It seems that decent and honest men and women become overwhelmed by the wheeling and dealing it takes to get power within government and bend to the party whips who don’t give a damn about the country since their allegience is to their party.

I guess we just have to be glad that at least we have the appearance of freedom and democracy even if it isn’t quite as genuine as we would like it to be.

Where Are The Police? Oh They’re Busy On Twitter

You would think that in a country that claims to have free speech you could say pretty much whatever you want and make a joke if you wish.

I have seen plenty of comedians on TV talking about blowing up the Houses Of Parliament, suggesting that maybe Guy Fawkes wasn’t so bad and I am sure, unless my memory fails me, that I have seen news programmes with members of the public when invited to give their views on MP’s expenses saying that MP’s should be hung from the lamposts. I have certainly said that myself about some of the banks management.

So the point is we all say things we don’t mean either in jest or to make a point but it doesn’t mean we will carry out the threat. I’ll bet that in any social gathering someone, at some point will say something along the lines of we should shoot the lot of them, they all need hanging or we should blow the lot of them up.

So, when a 26 year old, on finding out that Robin Hood airport was closed due to snow he posted on Twitter that, “Crap! Robin Hood Airport is closed. You’ve got a week… otherwise I’m blowing the airport sky high!” it was pretty obvious to anyone but an imbecile that it was said in jest. The week referred to the fact that he was due to fly from that airport a week later.

Yes we live in times of uncertainty and there is an ever present threat, as there always has been right back to Guy Fawkes and before, though the availability of explosives does seem to be commonplace these days.

Anyway, apparently the MI5, MI6, all the government terrorist threat experts and the bomb squad use twitter to find out where all the threats are coming from. So, it comes as no surprise that as soon as they saw a joke posted they leapt into action. The result of which was that this man appeared in court last week charged with menacing or something similarly serious sounding.

Why didn’t they just charge him with speaking in a public forum? That seems to be the real crime he committed and in this day and age it seems we are not allowed to say anything we might think, or maybe we are not allowed to think. The thought police are very active and apparently spend their time on Twitter.

He was found guilty and released on bail awaiting sentencing which, it was pointed out, might well include a custodial sentence. Maybe all the prisons are empty and they are looking for ways to fill them up again but that wasn’t the situation last time I heard any figures. Rumor has it that our jails are filled to bursting.

You would think that when there are real crimes being committed every day and people live in fear of attack, hiding inside their homes every day, that the police really do have better things to do.

It’s yet another sad tale of society, or rather governance and regulation, gone mad and a sad day for justice and democracy.

It seems very odd that when everything appeared to be going pear-shaped in Iran after their election politicians here were applauding the freedom Twitter gave people to voice their opinions yet as soon as a British citizen says something the British authorities don’t like they come down on him like a ton of bricks.

Hypocrisy is best served by British politicians because they truly are the experts.
