Jeremy Clarkson has cultivated a likeable character. He acts the fool but clearly he is no fool. Watching him and his co-presenters on Top Gear you could easily imagine the script had been written by a twelve year old schoolboy. The childish antics and behaviour are amusing so long as you don’t take it all seriously.

His latest foot in mouth attacks thousands of Public Sector workers and will offend most of them. His comments that Public Sector strikers should be taken out and executed in front of their families would be offensive when talking about evil and dispicable people but when said about decent people who are simply exercising a democratic right to protest and strike over the terms and conditions they are employed under, it is an outrageous thing to say.

Jeremy Clarkson makes a living from doing what many would pay to do if they had the opportunity. He may consider it hard work and he may work hard to develop the character he presents himself as, however he should learn that there are boundaries to what he thinks are funny comments.

He went on to say “ I mean, how dare they go on strike when they have these gilt-edged pensions that are going to be guaranteed while the rest of us have to work for a living. “

I would love to see how he would feel if he did a real job of work. If he was a hospital cleaner, a nurse, a teacher or street cleaner would he think he was well paid with a wonderful pension? I doubt it. I have no doubt that if he were a public sector worker he would be stating his strong view that public sector workers were being unfairly treated by a Government who seem to think that earning millions in the City is a good thing but earning thousands in the public sector is bad.

Jeremy Clarkson needs to grow up and open his eyes to the real world rather than ignoring it, while he plays around in fast cars and get paid excessively for the privilege. He referred to people in the private sector having to work for a living. He is right that they do but few would consider what he does anything like having a real job and he should think about that before criticising others who do work very hard for wages that would not cover his yearly petrol bill.

When people are threatened with jail for joking about blowing up Robin Hood Airport or suggesting we should all go out and have a riot it would seem outrageous, and perhaps be linked to having friends in high places, if Jeremy Clarkson avoids a visit from the local police. It seems that you only have to speak to a policeman these days to get arrested so I would expect he would then be arrested pending enquiries. This is after all what we have come to expect to happen in the United Kingdom of today.

It would have been so much simpler if he had just kept his big mouth shut but I assume he was on the One Show promoting his latest book or TV show or some other way of making easy money. What a shame the public sector workers do not have the easy opportunities to make money that he, in his privileged position, has.

As if having suffered the devastation caused by a 9.0 earthquake and a huge tsunami wasn’t enough, Japan has also been struggling to cope with the aftermath of damage to one of their nuclear power facilities.

For two weeks workers at the plant have been battling to regain control of the systems that were supposed to be perfectly safe. Risking their lives in their valiant attempts to manage many difficult problems they face to get things back to some sort of safe and stable situation.

How can this have happened when we have been told for years that nuclear power was perfectly safe and there was no chance of anything going wrong?

Yes, the plant suffered a 9.0 earthquake which is more than it had been designed for. Yes it suffered from a very high tsunami that was higher and more powerful than the plant had been designed to cope with but surely that is the whole point. It was not designed to cope with what nature threw at it. It was not safe.

Now we are being told that Japan is a special case. The situation there is very different to the UK. We do not suffer frequent powerful earthquakes and we do not suffer from devastating tsunamis.

That may be true today. There was a devastating tsunami in 1396. Who knows what tomorrow might bring. When the nuclear lobby claims something is safe they seem to use a different standard to the rest of us. Their idea of safety is that things will probably be ok. They think that if something is unlikely to happen that means it is safe.

Most of us humans consider something is safe when it can never do you any harm. Cars can be dangerous and many people die on our roads every year but just having a car sitting outside your house will not kill you. Having a nuclear power station next door could.

We are told we must have nuclear if we are to avoid catastrophic shortages of power in the future. Really? Well, why not start by ensuring we don’t waste what we already have?

We have all seen pictures of the city of London light up like a beacon in the evenings when there is hardly anybody working. Lights are left on, computers are left on. Huge amounts of energy are going to waste. We have shops with their front doors wide open in winter and you can feel the blast of hot air leaving the premises as you walk into the store.

We waste energy at an appalling rate and the way energy suppliers work and bill us means that it gets cheaper the more you use. Surely that is back to front if we are supposed to becoming a greener society?

Instead of going more nuclear we should be looking to put solar panels on the roof of every home in the country. The installation of solar panels on the roof of a house offers the possibility of collecting energy from the sun throughout daylight hours. A town with every roof covered by solar panels would generate considerable amounts of clean renewable power with complete safety and wit no problems of disposal of nuclear waste by having to store it and arrange security for a thousand years.

It is astonishing that we have not been furiously developing tidal power. We live on an island surrounded by powerful seas yet we have done very little to collect any of the massive amounts of energy available within those waves and tides.

It is very likely there will be a huge backlash in Japan against Nuclear power. Since they have few energy resources it would seem likely that Japan will go into the development and installation of Solar power and wave and tidal energy in a big way. They will probably take the place we could have had of being a world leader in tidal power technology.

We must learn lessons from the problems faced by the nuclear plant in Japan. We may not suffer the same type of devastating problems but what would happen if the whole of the North of England and Scotland were affected by some sort of nuclear accident? The consequences are too scary to contemplate but the possibility, no matter how small, must be considered.

The lesson should surely be that we should fully develop other, much safer technologies before we go using Nuclear Power. Encouragement of better and more efficient use of energy would be a good start. Insulating our homes and cutting down on wasteful business practices would make much more sense.

If there were no money to be made from building nuclear power stations and their use didn’t provide the raw material for nuclear bombs you can be sure there would be nobody wanting to build nuclear power stations.

We claim to be concerned for the planet we leave behind for our children so we cannot leave them piles of nuclear waste that they will still be having to manage in a thousand years, just so we can have neon lights flashing their advertising at us. We need sensible use of the power we already have available and much greater use of solar power and wind and tidal energy collection systems.

Apparently you can’t just take your airliner to the garage and ask them to ‘Fill er Up’ because that can make the plane too heavy to take off.

Maybe it is to do with the length of the runway but an Easyjey aircraft at Birmingham had this problem on Boxing day and 30 passengers were asked to leave the aircraft so it could take off.

Apparently they were compensated and given overnight accomodation but it must have been annoying to say the least.

I wonder how they picked the 30 people. Did they weigh them and remove the heaviest?

You know that kids are growing up in a different world when this happens.

A 14-year-old girl from Hertfordshire who included her address on a Facebook invitation to her party was alarmed when 21,000 said they would be coming.

The party was cancelled when the school pupil was swamped by RSVPs from unwanted would-be guests on the social networking site.

The girl, from Harpenden, had reportedly only intended to invite 15 friends to her 15th birthday party.

via BBC News – Girl’s horror as 21,000 RSVP Facebook party invite.

We constantly hear how parents need to watch what their kids are doing online and this is an innocent example of how things can get out of hand. Most parents would not have had a clue about what this openly published invitation might have lead to.

Our kids are having to learn about the risks and effects of sites like facebook and some of those effects may not be obvious for years to come. Many of todays kids may be shocked when their previous entries on social bookmarking sites are raised at job interviews when they are parents themselves.

It seems privicy is an old fashioned concept.

I don’t believe the pope is a stupid man, in fact I am sure the opposite is true. He must be a very intelligent man to fight his way up the political ladder of the Roman Catholic church. He has started his visit to the UK with some rather controversial statements and placed his foot firmly in his mouth.

One of the things he said today was that we should learn lessons from ‘atheist extremism of the 20th century’. The implication was that the Nazis were atheists therefore all atheists are nazis. Rather insulting to all the good people of the world who don’t follow or agree with his beliefs.

I’m not sure how one would define what exactly atheist extremism is. Presumably he is suggesting that anyone who argues that there is no evidence of God is in some way an extreme atheist and therefore comparable to Hitler and his cronies.

I would expect a lot of faithful catholics would be just as offended that people who they know and care about who are decent, honest, good people should be compared to Nazis because they are not so easily convinced that because someone says something it must be true. The pope may genuinely believe he was appointed by the hand of God working though the cardinals in Rome and he is entitled to think what he likes but then so is everybody else.

For him to come over to this country and start spouting off his point of view is not so different to the Nazis. He is convinced he is right just as the Nazis were sure they were the master race. He may not be quite as abhorrent as the Nazi regime he certainly heads up a religious group who have done some dreadful deeds in their time. Killing people because you disagree with their point of view is not so dissimilar from what the Nazis did and the Catholic church had it’s hands dirtied by plenty of death and destruction, ‘in the name of God’. God would surely be offended and extremely upset by such behaviour.

Inmore recent times we have seen plenty of evidence of the church protecting itself to avoid embarrassment and loss of respect by covering up dreadful behaviour by significant numbers of it’s supposedly god fearing representatives who had a liking for small children either as targets for their sadistic urges or their sexual pleasures.

The Pope is hardly someone who should be lecturing other people in how they should behave or what they shoul;d believe. He should be ridding his church of all the deviants and turning them over to the police to suffer some sort of punishment. Perhaps the Pope considers that if they have confessed their sins that makes everything all right. Tell that to the victims and see if they agree. Maybe he believes that God will punish these depraved people who claim to represent God and for once I think maybe the spiteful and vengeful God referred to in the bible would be an appropriate type of higher being to deal with them. But, then again. Maybe the Pope is all too aware that there is no good reason to believes that religion is anything more than pomp and pagentry and means nothing.

I find it extremely offensive that a man who is in a position to do so much good can cause so much harm. This is a man who is happy allowing the child molesters to get away with their crimes. A man who is happy preventing innocent and good people avoid a painful and early death simply by the use of condoms and this is a man who insults half the human population of the world by telling us that women are not of equal status to men.

He should be ashamed of himself. rather than telling people who are not child molesters, innocent people killers or people who lack respect for all members of the human race, that they are something similar to the Nazis is beyond belief. I would hope that all decent and fairminded Catholics would agree this is an insult to many people who are far more virtuous than many of the clergy.

I had no intention of writing anything about the Popes visit to the UK. I couldn’t care less that he is coming to visit, though I don’t quite see why the taxpayers should have to fork out the estimated £20 million to cater for his security requirements so he can have a holiday. I can only assume he has been watching too much Big Brother, or maybe Eastenders, and he thought a bit of controversy would get him some much needed publicity.

Personally I think he should be put straight on a plane and shipped out of here. If he is so insensitive, ignorant and rude as to say such insulting things as he has already done he should be charged with causing offence or shipped out straight away.

If only they had Michael Caine standing their saying, “You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!” when their explosive charges had destroyed the bank yet left the cash machine they were after still securely fixed to the ground.

There were reports yesterday of council contractors painting a ‘No Entry’ sign on the road but they spelt it wrong and it said ‘NO ENTRT’ You have to wonder how such a thing can happen.

Maybe they Two Mr T men in that day and forgot to get the man who does the Y’s.

The council said they rely on their contractors to do they work as required and they just do spot checks now and again. Maybe they need to do spellchecks as well.

It seems astonishing but in an age when the only thing companies seem to think about is profits perhaps we should not be too surprised. Primark had been selling a range of bikini sets for children with the tops being padded with the intention of making the children look rather more adult shaped.

Now I am sure that most adults would read that and think it ridiculous so how come Primark failed to do so? To their credit they have responded to criticism by withdrawing the range of items and also intending to donate any profits made on these to a childrens charity but they should be asking themselves how the decision was made to stock such things in the first place.

Let us hope lessons have been learned throughout the retail industry that sexualizing children is not considered to be a good thing to do.

This is classic. While a live video interview was being carried out on the Australian TV Channel 7News with Macquarie Bank’s Street headquarters to discuss some breaking news about interest rates an employee, described as being a mid-level client investment manager was browsing glamour images on his computer in the background.

At some point during the video a collegue presumably tells him they are filming behind him and he turns to see the camera whereupon his screen suddenly reverts to showing spreadsheets.

Maybe he was stitched up by a collegue but whatever the reasons, it is good to see the real world and how some bankers spend at least some of their time earning huge bonuses. The clip is below. Look to the middle on the left side of the screen and have a smile.

His employers say they are investigating and point out that they have a strict code on how their employees use IT resources.

It all goes to show that you should never let your guard down, especially when there are TV cameras around.

Apparently the Skipton Building Society have somehow manage a cock-up that has meant the details of accounts have been printed on the reverse of statements sent to other account holders.

Apparently the Skipton has appologised. Well, that makes everything ok then.

How do these cockups keep happening? The age of computers has enabled us to do things previously unimaginable. We can do great big tasks at the click of a button but please, before you press that button check that you are not about to commit some almighty error.

In the good old days a member of staff making a mistake might have meant a 10 or twenty people had errors made on their accounts. Now with one press of a button millions of errors can be made instantly.

Companies have to learn that they must allow staff the time to ensure these tasks are done properly. Check, double-check and triple check.

Otherwise you end up looking really stupid like the Skipton Building Society. Would you pick them as your first choice for investment having heard about this? I know I wouldn’t.
