A New Government And A Moment Of Political History

Written on May 12th, 2010 by adminno shouts

This has been a long drawn out election in which nobody was ever entirely sure who would be Prime Minister just a few hours hence. Finaly it has reached a resolution and the answer has been as unlikely as everything else that has happened throughout the election campaign period.

Gordon Brown resigns: Suddenly but with a dignified speech Gordon Brown resigned during the evening of the 11th may 2010 bringing an end to 13 years of the New Labour experiment. Some will argue it was a success though many would disagree but as he leaves office no one can doubt the genuine intentions of GB to do what he could to help improve the lives of the British people. History will judge how effectively he did that.

David Cameron Is Prime Minister:

After the resignation of Gordon Brown David Cameron was invited to the Palace for an audience with the Queen where she invited him to form the new government. He accepted and was driven to 10, Downing Street where he delivered a very positive speech emphasizing that his government would be a coalition between Tories and Liberal Democrats which would protect the weakest in society whilst encouraging us all to work together for the betterment of everyone.

Nick Clegg is Deputy Prime Minister

After a day of discussions and dealings both parties have voted to support the deal arranged for the Lib Dems & Tories to work in a coalition government. Nick Clegg is to be Deputy Prime Minister and several other Ministerial posts will go to Lib Dem MPs.

These are momentous moves in British political history and only time will tell if and how well it works but it is starting well and could pave the way for a new way of doing politics in the future. We will hear a lot more specific detail tomorrow but for now let us celebrate something different that could be the best way to deal with the difficult times this country faces as we deal with the enormous debt problems we have.

Labour MPs Grumble With Good Reason

Written on May 11th, 2010 by adminno shouts

Lots of grumbles appearing from Labour MPs that they haven’t been consulted about talks with the Liberal Democrats but they are only experiencing what the rest of us have experienced in the last couple of years. A group of unelected people trying to control the direction of British government.

A negotiating team that apparently included the unelected Lord Adonis, the unelected Peter Mandelbot and the unelected Alister Cambell attempting to direct how Britain is governed is almost a coup and something that goes completely against pretty much everything we think of as democracy.

The Labour politicians are right to grumble but they should have seen off this change to how Labour carried on as soon as Mandleson appeared on the scene and as for him being made a lord, it brings shame on our country in my opinion.

Voting And Serendipity

Written on May 11th, 2010 by adminno shouts

There has been a lot of talk about the electorate voting for a hung parliament but under our ancient first past the post system that is as untrue as it is to say the voters wanted any other result. When you vote in your constituancy you vote for your MP and whether that agrees with your view on who should govern Britain you have no control over what happens all you can do is cast your vote for your prospective MP.

We each of us have just one vote to use as we please. We may not like the choices offered to us and most of us will have wasted our time even bothering to vote since in almost every seat votes against the winning candidate are more than votes for a candidate. We do not have the option of voting for a hung parliament though we seem to have ended up with that result thanks to strange results all over the country and serendipity.

For thirteen years we have had a government that listens to nobody and cared about nothing other than their own interests. It may be a little annoying not knowing who the new government will be, while these negotiations take place, but isn’t it great to see politicians talking to each other in a positive and constructive way. Lets hope it is the dawn of a new era in politics where this becomes the norm.
