There is a golf game going on at St Andrews at the moment apparently. I have never seen the point of watching golf but thousands make the journey and stand out in all weathers just to watch other people playing golf.

Golf has always seemed to be mucj more of a sport to participate in rather than simply one to watch, to me at any rate. I just don’t get it. Why do people want to watch other people playing when they could be playing golf themselves?

I enjoy the occaisional game of golf but have never been a man who would make my partner a golf widow but it is a challenging game and we all need lots of practice. There are lots of different training guides and golf training ideas for improving your game and I would benefit from a bit of study with them but I doubt I would learn much from watching the professionals play but maybe, one day when I am rich I will visit one of this big golfing events and see if I have it all wrong.

The idea behind owning a timeshare seems like a pretty good idea because we have no need to own a vacation property for the whole year if we only use it for a few weeks each year. The only question is if the price is right and the service by the management company is good.

Let me guide you through the way timeshare works is that a whole bunch of people each own a period of a week or more for the same property. If you own the first week in July that is your property for that week regardless of if you choose to use it or not. You can leave it empty but that seems like a waste of money.

You can usually let friends and family use the timeshare property for a vacation if you cannot go yourself. You may be able to rent out the property for your period of ownership or you may choose to swap your week with someone else who owns a timeshare property somewhere else.

The benefits of timeshare are mainly that it is cheaper than owning a whole property and it needs little management from you. The downside is that it fixes your vacation in one place but you may be able to do a swap and try different places around the world.

After missing out on the chance to have a grand prix last year Canada produced another terrific race. The Bridgestone tire company would probably rather have not had tire problems become a big issue as no doubt they want to be known for quality tires that grip well and last a long time but that can help make racing rather dull.

The tyres made available for this race helped make it a great race because they were more subseptible to wear and damage causing the teams to try different strategies and have plenty of pitstops.

The tyre supply company may not want this sort of publicty but race fans will love it.Let us hope we get more races where the tires are marginal and require careful management.

The F1 season has been great so far and let us hope we continue to have these fascinating and exciting races right up until the end of the season.

The questions raised about travel insurance following the problems caused by the ash cloud from a volcano in Iceland have made people wonder exactly what they pay travel insurance for. Severl companies seem to have decided that it was an act of god and was not therefore covered. Maybe if you don’t believe in God you can argue that there can be no such thing so you should be covered but that argument may not achive much success if it would mean the insurance companies had to pay out a lot of money. Why would they allow the question of facts to interfere with their ways of ripping customers off.

Nevertheless, travel insurance remains an important item to be arranged when you make any travel plans. Most of the travel insurance policies will give you reassurance that if some sore of disaster befalls you while you are travelling there should be some help available.

An annual policy makes good sense if you travel several times each year but if you only go away once you might consider some of the shorter term policies which are likely to be cheaper.

Spring is in the air and somehow that makes us want to get ready for the new season. It’s a time of spring cleaning and starting everything fresh and new and closet organizing now is a great way of freshening up our wardrobes.

I bet you have items in your closet that you have not looked at in a year. I certainly do and most other people will too. We have those items of clothing and accessories that we keep just in case, for that special day when they would be just right but somehow that day never arrives.

If you haven’t used something in a year, the chances are you will not use it this year either. Package it up and put it in your attic or storage space if you must or throw it away or recycle it if you can bring yourself to do that but get it out of your closet.

If you can be strong and throw away the dresses, coats, jackets and slacks you don’t use you might double the space in your closet. Surely there are better things to keep than the clothes you don’t wear.

Go on, be brave. Have a great springtime clear out with a good session of closet organizing which will allow yourself to see what you have got and easily sort them into different color sequences so you can find things quickly and simply.

There is an interesting, and worrying, article over at The Register about the sharing of private individuals data across countries within the EU.

The register used a Freedom of Information request to obtain a copy of the “Issues and Risks” report prepared by the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) which warns that UK citizens DVLA records will be accessible by other EU member countries with no checks or requirements as to the purpose of obtaining that data.

This follows the implementation of the Prüm Convention, which the government signed up to in June 2007. This convention is, apparently, to allow EU countries to share information to prevent serious crime, terrorism and illegal immigration but in doing so it appears that any of the countries involved could take and use the information in any way they please.

It would appear there is nothing to stop a foreign country taking the information contained on the DVLA database and selling it to commercial organizations and the register points out one quote in the report which says that a, “gatekeeper” function to block access to personal data for trivial or commercial reasons is “not practical”

You have to wonder if the terrorists are not winning. Our government, and others, have trashed the rights of the individual, brought in dictatorial laws and have even been involved with to some degree or another kidnap and torture, all in the name of protecting us. Surely we should be defending the values that we believe make us a better, more honest and just society?

What is the point of defending us all if by so doing you take away all the rights to privacy, individual rights and freedoms that are what we are supposed to be defending. It appears that the only measure used to judge the success of the anti terror campaign is the body count. If we avoid casualties but lose the democracy we are supposed to be defending how can that be judged a success?

I do not suggest this is an easy task. I have every sympathy with the security services and government in protecting us from an enemy whose sole purpose appears to be to disrupt our society and cause death and destruction but if the aim of the terrorists is to destabilize the governments of the western world by making them authoritarian and causing them to destroy the rights of the individual, they sadly, seem to be succeeding and that is not something any of us should be happy about.

It was interesting to hear that Bob Diamond, now president of Barclays and the head of their investment banking division was saying that severe restrictions on bankers bonuses would be bad for banking and for the economy because many bankers would leave.

This from a man who has, in the past recieved bonuses amounting to up to around £20,000,000 in a year.Well, he would say that wouldn’t he. It would seem rather unlikely that he would support measures to restrict bonuses having benefited so much himself, in the past.

What we need are bankers who are prepared to do their jobs for a fair salary and a fair bonus. The sorts of figures thrown around of just how large a proportion of bank profits are given out in bonuses is staggering. A bonus of 5% would be a lot but in some cases it is up to 50% that is surely a bad business practice by any standard.

When the tv licence fee was first introduced it made sense that only those privelidged few who could afford televisions should pay the licence fee but in this modern age where tv has become almost universal in evey home it seems madness to maintain an expensive to collect system for raising the finance to produce television programmes.

I agree with those who feel that since they are not interested in watching television they should not have to pay for the service but on the other hand it seems crazy that there is an expensive process of collecting licence fees from those who are liable to pay.

The cost of collecting the money could be cut at a stroke by the simple expedient of making a payment from tax revenues which would also save the majority of families who do currently pay the licence £140 per year and also prevent the ridiculous situation of people having to be sent to jail because they cannot afford the tv licence fee or the fines that are imposed if thaey are taken to court.

Two female police officers who previously had an arrangement whereby each would babysit for the other when they were working has been stopped by Ofsted under the Childcare Act 2006.

Officers representing Ofsted knocked at the door of one of the women and informed her that they had become aware she might be running an illegal childcare service. She, as any normal person would, thought that this was clearly a misunderstanding and invited the officers in to explain. Even after fully explaining the situation she was told that to continue their arrangement they would both need to become registered childminders and pass all appropriate tests or face prosecution.

To become a registered childminder is not a simple process of simply checking you are a decent person. There are all sorts of rules and regulations to follow and I know personally one lady who gave up because she got fed up with being required to follow what seems like silly rules such as having enough black as well as white dolls and having to follow irritatingly complicated procedures with the ever present fear of an ofsted inspection at any time. I guess if you are running a childminding nursery looking after dozens of children it all makes sense but for one or two children it seems excessive.

The problem for the two police officers was that the exchange of service for each other has been considered to be a ‘reward’ by the Ofsted officers which is a reasonable thing to decide since there clearly is a reward in that they each help out the other.

The law was clearly never intended to stop people babyminding for close friends under such an arrangement and Vernon Coaker the Minister for Children, Schools and Families is speaking to Ofsted about the interpretation of the word ‘reward’. It is hard to see how they could interpret it any other way than that which they have done and all they are doing is enforcing the law as it stands.

This would seem to be another example of a law rushed through parliament with the best of intentions but without the appropriate time spent on it to ensure it does what it is supposed to do. In this case that was to protect children and parents from dodgy childminders but it was surely never intended to stop the practice of babyminding for friends now and again to earn a few pounds or in an exchange of service by friends.

It is a worrying thought that there may be dozens more laws that have been rushed through parliament in recent years that are full of careless errors such as this and that ordinary decent and honest people may well suffer for the lack of care taken.

Apparently this does not apply to anyone looking after the children in their parents home so employing a schoolgirl or friend to regularly babysit to allow the parents to have a break and earn a few pounds is not affected by this law.
