Election Time Please Tell Me When Its Over

Well finally it is announced. The most widely expected date for the election has been confirmed. Finally we get to hear Gordon Brown say something we know to be true, it has been a while. All the spin is finally over and he managed to say something honest, The election will be on May 6th.

Not that he is alone in the talent for telling whoppers. All the parties have been busy trying to make everything they say wonderful while they diss their opposite number. I am sick of the election already and it felt like it started around the new year anyway.

The first party to try treating me as an adult and to be honest with me is likely to attract my attention but to politicians it seems they think it is just a schoolyard game and it is all about them winning and they don’t care a hoot about the country or the electorate.

How many times have you had a party visit you or put leaflets through your door in the last four years? To be fair to the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party do seem a lot more active in local communities. They seem to be a bit more interested in the people whereas the main two parties seem only interested in getting elected.

It may be that I am being a little unfair but I am the voter. I am the customer. Rather than trying to force their ideas down my throat they should be trying to do what the electorate want and the Government have demonstrated over the last 13 years that they want to do, what they want to do.

Did you vote to make men who visit prostitutes criminals? I certainly didn’t and whilst trafficking of people for the sex trade is clearly an abomination it does not justify making every man who chooses to pay for sex rather than bother with all that buying a woman dinner and showing her how he can give her a good life, a potential criminal just for having sex. And innocence is no defense. Can you believe that? In this country? Being innocent and not knowing is now a crime. It’s shocking. I never have and never will visit a prostitute but in a free country we should surely be allowed to use our talents as we best can. The biggest bunch of prostitutes in the country sit at Westminster. They sell their souls for power and prestige and then they think they have the right to tell us what is right and wrong!

I am not expecting any great improvement in the next Parliament. I would be delighted to be proved wrong but it seems with the current party system and whips to make the members of parliament vote according to party lines instead of listening to the electorate is sad sign of a failing democracy.
