Rendition Flights And Democracy

Labour MP Mike Gapes, chairman of the foreign affairs select committee, told MPs the US administration “has clearly misled or lied to our government, [which] has resulted in our government misleading… members of this House.”

He was refering to the rendition flights which had apassed through the UK dependent territory of Diego Garcia.

It is claimed that the detainees on board were not subject to torture but if not then what was the point of the flight? Was it just to give the detainees a bit of a holiday? If it was so that they could be interviewed in other countries then why were the interviewers not flown to the US for  the interview.

Whatever the reasons in this particular case, rendtion to other countries for aggressive interviewing is an evil thing to do. It is a sad aspect of a country that claims to be the world leader in democracy and freedom. Terror tactics carried out by a democracy are still terror tactics and no one who believes in genuine democracy and civil rights could possibly support it. Using a tactic such as this to avoid the laws that are in place to defend civil rights of human beings is a disgrace to a great nation and we should condem such evil practices at every opportunity.

No doubt the US government would be vigourous in it’s critism of another country treating US citizens in such a way.
