So Much For A New Era In Politics

We have a new Prime Minister, well, not quite new now. Our recent aquisition has been in place for just over 100 days now and is starting to show his real colours.

He started out saying that he would bring with him a new era in politics. He would rise above the party bickering and bring a clear vision to the future of Britain. He claimed that he would “rebuild trust in politics” and promised to lead a government with “new priorities” So what has happened so far?

We had the ridiculous election or no election farce. We get the impression that he dithered and dallied, unsure what to do. We are now informed that he wanted to develop his vision of Britain before going to the polls. So, why didn’t he just say so a few weeks ago? He had every opportunity to deny the speculation about a possible election and whilst he claims he wants to do what is right for Britain, clearly allowing the speculation to continue was bad for Britain. Goodness knows what the rest of the world makes of this debacle. There can be no doubt that it was the poor showing in the polls that convinced Gordon Brown to cancel any plans he had for an election.

The Tory leader David Cameron has suggested that the Prime Minister has treated the electorate like fools and there can be no disputing that but in doing so Gordon Brown has made himself look very foolish and cynical towards the electorate. There can be no doubt that his claims for bringing in a new era are in tatters. He is a very competent political animal and clearly intends to spin just as much as the previous PM appeared to do.

The gloves are now off and the PM’s honeymoon period is over. We shall have to wait and see how different his new vision is. So far it looks like much the same as it has been in the past.
