They Call This A Democracy? How Can They?
According to a poll conducted by YouGov directly after the leaders debate the other evening voters could have altered their opinions somewhat and changed the position of the parties in this race to the election.
According to the poll 28% said they would vote for Labour, 30% for the Liberal Democrats and 33% for the Conservatives which puts the LibDems in 2nd place. Now you would think this was a pretty significant thing and whilst it may be a flash in the pan following the debate the figure don’t give the result you would expect.
According to the BBC if this were translated into seats it would mean that the result would mean 276 seats for Labour; 245 seats for the Conservatives; 100 seats for the Liberal Democrats and 29 seats for Others.
Yes, you read that right. Labour could be the smallest in terms of votes but they would have the most seats in the houses of parliament. This has to be a bad thing. We are supposed to be a democracy. We are supposed to decide who governs on the basis of how the electorate vote and who they choose. It suggests there are even more things wrong with our democratic process than we already knew about and there are plenty of those already.
A party with the fewest votes getting the most MPs in the houses of Parliament is just plain wrong and I would hope that if this were to happen one of the very first things the coalition government that resulted would change the electoral system to reflect the views of the people.
