They Call This Democracy?

It is interesting watching the news and the interviews with various government ministers to see how they clearly don’t believe in the idea of democracy. The last thing the government wants is for the electorate to have a say in what they do and who is in government.

Labour do badly in the local elections? – It’s because the public are punishing the government for the expenses scandal

“The local elections are always seen by the public as a way of punishing the government.”

Surely democracy and local elections should be about who we want to represent us in local government and if  the electorate are having to use local elections as their only way of saying what they think of central government there is something seriously wrong with our electoral system.

What does it say about our democratic system that instead of choosing the best people to run our local councils we are having to try to make the government listen to us?

The system fails us all and needs a serious overhaul so that the government can no longer ignore peoples thoughts and feelings and start to respond to what the electorate require from the government they pay for and employ.
